Open source platforms and technologies may have significant impact on the cost of operating telecom networks. Besides potentially lowering the cost to a point where rural coverage makes sense, open source can take full advantage of white box trends, virtualization, and software-defined networking to reduce the cost and OpEx of a fixed and cellular network for deployment in underdeveloped regions, and could possibly bleed back into conventional markets. This month's ComTech Forum meeting on Open Source Telecom brings together members, telcos, vendors, service companies and startups working on open source technologies for rural, greenfield, and developing markets, including unlicensed and Facebook's OpenCellular project.

Silicon Valley, California, Feb 2018/Meeting Recap/ Kicking off our meeting at Aviat Networks, Sean Seaton, VP Global Innovation and Partnerships at Rogers, spoke about a radical rethink of the role of network operators. Passing the baton on to our panel, Christos Kolias, Principal at Orange, Andile Ngcaba, Chairman & Founder at Convergance Partners. Arpit Joshipura, GM Networking & Orchestration at Linux Foundation and Sanjay Aiyagari, Sr. Solutions Architect, Telecommunications & NFV at Red Hat debated if the future of communications growth is from OTT initiatives, or from the big players (Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Google, etc.), then network operators need to consider how to be excellent partners to these innovators. How else to continue to share in the revenues of the applications and services ecosystems? Using Open technologies and APIs can provide innovators with the tools to integrate the network into their offerings.
